I have a new friend.
Yes, this is a toilet brush.
Ok, before I sound crazy, let me start from the beginning. I have been trying to experiment lately with different textures in backgrounds and around figures in oils. And so I have been using some different cloths, some spackle spatulas and some fan brushes. Which worked really well. So I started to look at buying some really large fan brushes. Owchie. They get very expensive. So I tabled the idea and had not thought about it much until Saturday. I was visiting my son at college for the Easter weekend, and we happened to browse around at a cute little organic store in his college town. In among the soaps and linen towels and cutesy decorations for a bathroom I spied it.
An organic, wooden-handled, soft-bristed, toilet brush. Bing! I was in love.
It is perfect. I figured I could load it up with paint and make all kinds of cool textures now. And then I found I can also scrub into wet washes of oil paint and get a very soft, scratchy texture too. Go me.
My son thinks I am slightly crazy and a neighbor was looking at me kinda funny when I passed him walking from my loft to my studio carrying a bunch of rags that I had washed for the studio along with my new friend- which I had already used in brown paint. Yeah, I am clueless. I am an artist, so it is a good thing I don’t care what I look like any more or, more importantly, what other people think.
My poor son.
Hey, whatever works and this is working great. Here is a sneek peek at an oil that I have been working on the last 2 days while using the wipe out method to set the image in the initial wet oil layer in raw umber. My new model has the best hair. But maybe I should not tell her this is what helped start getting that lovely texture.
Oh well… whatever works….
Fantastic! I also have been experimenting with textures, etc.
nice!
Wow!!! Awesome technique!
thanks! Gotta try everything and anything.
I am smiling, Christine! You never cease to amaze me. Love you. And love what you are doing in this painting.
Thanks! Art is all an experiment
OH my gosh. You crack me up. I laughed out loud when I saw the email intro……
