“A single leaf working alone provides no shade” – Chuck Page
As much as artists thrive in a solitary environment when creating works of art, sometimes we need an audience.
Is there anything more validating than sharing stories of artistic struggle and seeing someone in the audience nodding along? Anything better than a compliment from a peer? A shared love of colbalt? It keeps me fired up and happy to go back to solitary confinement and create again.
Sharing what we do and more importantly, HOW we do things brings artists together in a way that is unlike other professions. Its our teamwork. I love teaching about how I handle pastels along with my crazy stories of how I got to where I am today. I love explaining why I have a love affair with “Larry the Light Beam” and sharing that love with others. Best yet is watching my students’ artwork grow and have them stop committing the sin of breaking the Law of Light ever again.
So there is a lot of things going on this month where I will be sharing what I do with anyone that is interested. Come and study with me for a one day pastel workshop or just pop by one of my demos in downtown Greenville.
I am currently a “Guest Artist” at the Artists Guild Gallery of Greenville. It is run by a great group of artists with a wonderful exhibition space right on the main drag of downtown Greenville. For the next few months I am hanging some of my paintings there and then I will be doing a day of demonstrations on October 17th–
10 – 12pm
The Law of Light
Light affects everything we paint, no matter what medium. Grab your notebooks as I teach the Law of Light and its Rules and how the physics of light affect color and form and have to be followed in order to paint realistically. Also find out why I start a painting in yellow….
1:30 – 3:00pm
Live Portrait Demonstration
Working with a live model, I will paint a portrait with my 5-stage layering process in pastel while showing the many “markers of the face” to find and keep a likeness.
**You must resister prior to each demonstration as seating is limited. You may pay with Zelle using the QR code supplied on the registration form. If you do not use Zelle, you may pay at Artists Guild Gallery of Greenville before the demonstration but you must be registered. Visa, Mastercard and Discover cards are accepted as well as cash and checks.
Please pre-register.
And if you want some hands-on learning and want to learn about light, pastel and the portrait I will be teaching a one-day Pastel Workshop on November 7th at the same Artist Guild downtown. (See their website) The day will be spent on how to handle pastels with my method and learning about “Power.” So whether you are new to pastels or a pro, I guarantee I can shake up what you are doing for the better. All artists are welcome. Just click the link above and register.
And lastly, tonight I will at my studio welcoming the public for the First Fridays Gallery Crawl starting at 5:00 in the “Village” of West Greenville. A big, “Neighborhood Block Party” is happeing tonight with music and food trucks and vendors. I am right around the corner off of Pendleton Street in the new Beacon Studios building across from Art and Light Gallery. 31 Burdette Street Greenville. Pop by and see what I am up to!
See ya soon.
